Reading With Local Kids: Why Kiwanis Myrtle Beach Keeps Showing Up in the Classroom

A good book can get a whole classroom talking. We get to see that firsthand when our Kiwanis Myrtle Beach volunteers spend time reading with local students.
Reading for the Kids gives our members an opportunity to visit local classrooms, sit down with students, and enjoy a story together. It may seem like a simple volunteer project, but those visits are a meaningful part of how our club stays connected with children and schools throughout the Myrtle Beach and Horry County community.
For us, community service doesn't always have to involve a large event or fundraiser.
Sometimes it looks like opening a book and spending a little time with a classroom full of kids.
Reading for the Kids in Horry County Schools
With school back in session, Reading for the Kids is one of the ways our members can get directly involved with students in our area.
Volunteers visit local schools and read with children, giving students another opportunity to enjoy books alongside adults from their community. It's relaxed, personal, and usually a lot of fun for everyone involved.
Anyone who has spent time reading with young children knows that you don't simply get through the pages. Kids have questions. They notice details in the pictures. They make predictions about what happens next. Sometimes the conversation sparked by a book becomes just as enjoyable as the story itself.
Those are the kinds of interactions that make Reading for the Kids special to our members.
It's also a good reminder that volunteering with children in Myrtle Beach doesn't always require an enormous time commitment. Giving part of your day can still create a positive experience for a local student.
Why Reading With Children Matters
Reading is an important part of a child's education, but Reading for the Kids isn't intended to replace the work already happening in our local classrooms.
Our volunteers are there to support it.
Teachers and school staff put tremendous effort into helping students develop their reading skills. When community volunteers participate, children also get to see that people outside their classroom care about reading and are interested in spending time with them.
There's value in simply having another encouraging adult show up.
A volunteer may only be in the classroom for a short visit, but during that time, the students have someone's full attention as they experience a story together.
For Kiwanis Myrtle Beach, that's time well spent.
Community Service Can Be Simple
When people hear "community service," they sometimes picture a major volunteer project requiring an entire day.
Those projects certainly have their place, but they're not the only way to contribute.
Reading with students is a good example.
You don't need specialized equipment. You don't need to organize a large event. You simply need to be willing to give some of your time and engage with the kids in front of you.
That's something we want more people throughout Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand to understand about volunteering.
There are many ways to help your community, and not all of them require making a major commitment right away.
For someone who has been searching for volunteer opportunities in Myrtle Beach, SC, participating in a local service organization can provide opportunities to find projects that match your interests and availability.
Kiwanis Myrtle Beach and Our Local Schools
Supporting children has always been central to Kiwanis.
Here in Myrtle Beach, that mission becomes local through our relationships with schools and the projects our members participate in throughout Horry County.
Reading for the Kids is one piece of that involvement.
Our club also recognizes students through Terrific Kids, which celebrates qualities such as good character, responsibility, kindness, respect, and perseverance. We participate in back-to-school efforts and look for other opportunities to support children in the communities around us.
Each project may look a little different, but the focus remains on local kids.
Being involved with schools also gives our members a better understanding of the community we're serving. We aren't simply talking about helping children in Myrtle Beach. We have opportunities to meet them, spend time in their schools, and see some of the good work already taking place there.
More Than Reading a Book
Take a look at a photo from one of our classroom visits and you'll probably notice something before you notice the book.
Look at the kids.
They're gathered around the reader. They're listening. They're watching the pictures. Someone is usually smiling.
That's the part that's difficult to explain until you've experienced it.
Reading for the Kids isn't about a Kiwanis member standing at the front of a classroom and delivering a formal presentation. It's about sitting down with children and enjoying a story with them.
There's no need to make it more complicated than that.
And judging by the smiles we've seen during these visits, our volunteers tend to enjoy storytime just as much as the students.
Building Connections Throughout Myrtle Beach
One of the things we appreciate most about Kiwanis is that community service introduces you to people you might not otherwise meet.
Our members come together because they care about Myrtle Beach and want to be useful in the community. Through projects such as Reading for the Kids, we also have opportunities to connect with local educators and students.
Those connections help turn a service club into something much more personal.
Myrtle Beach is known around the country as a vacation destination, but those of us who live here know there's another side to our community. Families live here. Children grow up here. Teachers walk into classrooms every morning. Local organizations work throughout the year to address needs that visitors may never see.
Kiwanis Myrtle Beach is proud to be part of that year-round community.

Supporting Children Across Myrtle Beach and the Grand Strand
Myrtle Beach is part of a much larger community stretching throughout Horry County and the Grand Strand.
The needs of local children don't begin or end at a city boundary, which is why strong community relationships matter.
When schools, volunteers, service organizations, local businesses, and neighbors stay connected, there are more opportunities to notice where help is needed and respond.
Kiwanis International's broader mission centers on improving the lives of children. At Kiwanis Myrtle Beach, we have the opportunity to put that mission into practice close to home.
Reading for the Kids is one of the simplest examples.
A member walks into a local school.
A book gets opened.
The kids gather around.
And for a little while, everyone gets to enjoy a good story together.
